LSTD 3533 – Ecology and Evolution

Why is it cool?

Are you fascinated by the biological world around you? Are you intrigued by the mystery of our existence? These amazing topics and more can be explored in Ecology and Evolution.

This class is cool because it attempts to discover why life is the way it is, both visibly and microscopically. Whether you’re a science buff or not, you’ll have fun exploring why certain life forms exist and why they exhibit certain characteristics.

Discussions will include what may have occurred leading up to the appearance of the first organisms, how these theories have been tested in laboratories and why some suggestions about the appearance of life are not possible. Projects will also include the study of DNA and how gene duplication relates to evolution.

Through the study of “The Beak of the Finch” by Jonathan Wiener, one of the best case studies of evolution in motion, you’ll see in real time how natural selection has played out in finch populations in the Galapagos islands.

Another highlight of this course—a custom edition textbook is available that includes only the articles and chapters you’ll need for the course. This will cost you about half of what you’d pay if you purchased the regular textbooks.

Upon completion of the course, you’ll be able to define and discuss topics related to ecology, evolution and macroevolution and make the connection between what you learn and your own life experiences. You’ll know more about the life around us and be able to share this insight with your friends and family.
