Graduations Bring Us Together

Former Oklahoma Governor Bard Henry at graduationLast week’s graduation events marked a time of celebration for many students and their families. As I’ve said before, graduation is an important event not only for the graduates, but for their families and support systems as well.

For the last several years, I’ve been asked to assist with the Platform Party at commencement. I help shuttle the VIPs who sit on stage and get them from point A to point B. It’s a great opportunity, and I am humbled to be invited to participate. This year, I got to cart around former Gov. Brad Henry (right) and former CLS Dean George Henderson (who was presented an honorary degree that night) to the Gaylord Family Memorial stadium.

The College of Liberal Studies is unique in that many of our students live nowhere near Oklahoma. At Saturday’s convocation, grads from all over the country traveled to Norman for this special event. This included graduates from Connecticut, San Diego and New Orleans. Andrea Hood, (left) who received the George Henderson Award for Administrative Leadership, traveled from Scottsdale, Arizona.

It’s so cool that these graduates – and all our graduates, for that matter – took time out of their busy lives to commemorate this occasion. Graduations are one of the few events that bring together people from all walks of life and from near and far, whether you’re an elected official, a celebrity or just an “Average Joe.” But that doesn’t matter; what matters are the achievements you’ve made and the goals you’ve accomplished. Congratulations, graduates!
