CLS to Offer Low Cost Option for Textbooks

custom textbooks

Part of our mission is making the student experience as accessible and hassle-free as possible. Until now, however, textbooks have remained overbearingly pricey.

Not anymore.

CLS instructor Steve Gullberg has rethought and pioneered a cheaper way for students to buy textbooks, keeping money where it should be—in their pockets.

Gullberg has partnered with Cengage Learning to customize textbooks specifically for The Dynamic Universe and Ecology and Evolution. These new books will feature only articles and chapters students will need, saving them from having to purchase extra information. Amazingly, this will cut the textbooks’ cost by about half!

It is our hope that eventually, other CLS courses can adopt this method, especially for classes that include many chapters that are not being used. Full-time faculty member Roksana Alavi is one such professor embracing this system.

When asked about what gave him the idea for the custom textbooks, Gullberg replied, “I was looking for a way to make textbooks more efficient and to reduce costs to the students. I had heard that custom textbooks were an option, and I contacted the associated publishers. They confirmed it could be done, and we moved forward.”

Not only are these books more efficient for the students, but they hold personal value as well. Cengage Learning sent out an open call for artists to submit work that would be featured on the cover of the books. Dr. Gullberg’s wife, Jessica, was chosen for both textbooks.

Jessica is a professional artist who has painted for more than 15 years. Her primary interest has been in painting animals and she frequently is commissioned to paint portraits of dogs, cats, and horses. She has painted a variety of subjects, however, including large game and landscapes, and as well galaxies and nebulae. Her work has been featured in many shows and galleries and she has been an invited speaker for other artists.

With great pride, CLS is pleased to announce a progressive option for students to learn that is easier on the budget.
