About the College of Liberal Studies

History

The University of Oklahoma College of Liberal Studies (CLS) was established in 1961 by OU professors and administrators who recognized the need for adult and non-traditional students to continue their education while balancing work and family obligations. In a truly collaborative effort, faculty members from OU's existing colleges developed the first interdisciplinary Liberal Studies degree program in the country.

For more than 50 years, CLS has evolved to meet the academic and professional demands of its students and has become an internationally-recognized leader in higher education for non-traditional and adult students. From its humble beginnings of one-week seminars, to offering OU's first 100% online degree in 2003, CLS continues to develop accredited degree programs that allow its graduates to meet the challenges of the future.

The College of Liberal Studies faculty are leaders in the field of interdisciplinary academics and are focused on their students' success. CLS degree programs are anchored by seven accomplished full-time faculty members and are supported by more than 100 expert adjunct faculty.

Meet our deans and faculty
"It is professors committed to learning who have given CLS whatever character it may possess. For them, knowledge is a seamless fabric, and a life of learning carries the mind on an unbroken excursion through a universe of ideas."
—Burkett & Ruggiers, 1960
